Maintaining an anger diary has been helping me a lot.
It helps me to keep my emotions on check
It helps me counter question my thoughts and feelings during the distress period and moreover medications along with therapy and exercises like this has improved the quality of my life to a great deal.
Past two years have been such an emotional rollercoaster for me from being high on my emotions to get so low to the point where I wanted to kill myself and being a medical student was adding more to it.
My poor emotion regulation was affecting my studies, my relationships with my friends and family and finally I gave up trying on my own I just couldn’t take it.. after having a breakdown during one of my morning lecture i decided i had to take up some real action.
Coming from a background where mental health is not the first priority it gets really hard to make your loved one understand what’s bothering you and how you wanna act upon it. My mother couldn’t understand what was wrong with me, my family couldn’t understand a thing, I felt lonely and alone.
You know the real problem with mental issues is that what bothers you big time could be a normal thing for the other person, what made you cry whole night will be a daily routine for someone else and while you might get hurt by this harsh truth they cannot be blame for not understanding what you are going through because it’s your journey and you are solely responsible for whatever you feel.
But my family tried they tried to understand atleast they said they understands my mum she is illiterate she said she understands she gave me hope
Hope to make my life a better place to live in
Hope to give her back the love that she is giving me everyday
So I took to therapy and believe me it was the best decision of my life.
After every sessions the various activities that was assigned to me helped me practically with my problems(about which I’ll be writing soon) and that is where I came across various terminologies like Urge surfer, STOP skill, Grounding technique, and maintaining an anger diary as well
At first it was hard to pen down my feelings and thoughts.
As everything need practice it also requires practice,to maintain it every time you go through some distress is a tough job
I think Anger diary is nothing but journaling , you can write about your happy thoughts, your sad thoughts, you can pen down your every feeling.
And if writing is a cumbersome job for you, you can always record an audio or share your thoughts with someone trustable.
Here’s a step by step guide:-
1. SITUATION (what led you?)
2.THOUGHTS (what were your thoughts?)
3.FEELINGS (feelings you felt)
4.SYMPTOMS (physical symptoms like crying, racing heart, red with anger)
5.ACTIONS (what you did in the situation)
6.ASK WISE QUESTIONS (ask why you did it keep asking to get to the root and pen it down and analyse)
Hope it helps!
Open to suggestions and questions
Happy writing.
